Gluten Free Places to Eat in Milan, Italy
f like me you get confused when you find yourself speaking Spanish while trying to remember the 10 minutes of Duolingo Italian you learnt before the flight, don't worry. You are not insulting the locals by speaking the wrong language, Spanish and Italian just happen to be 89% similar.
Travelling with Crohn's - Italy
Senza Glutine - Gluten free , Senza Lactachine - Lactose free.
As a Crohnie who prefers to eat small portions at meal time, it took awhile for me to get used to Italian portion sizes. Mains so filing that the thought of dessert is enough to satisfy any sweet cravings. It’s fairly easy to find gluten free places to eat in Milan as a Crohn's traveller and you’ll have a wealth of options to choose from. I ate a lot of sorbet.
These are some of the places to eat in Milan on a weekend break:
A'storia - Upscale casual relaxed dining. 20 minutes of trying to figures out whether they had gluten free pasta. And me becoming more flustered as the waiter struggled to understand my Italian, we eventually figured out that they do have one type of gluten free pasta and gluten free bread. I had the Neapolitan Ragu with a glass of red wine. I advise you get a recommendation for your wine pairing from your waiter.
Gino Sorbillo - You should not pass up the chance to try some Italian Pizza, just make sure you go to the right location. I did not spend a ton of time on research but this was one of the best rated places to try for gluten pizza. We met a woman on the tram who advised us against the first place we intend to go because "it was too American" and recommended we visit this place instead. Fair warning though there is only one Sorbillo location that offers gluten free food in Milan. Avoid making the mistake I made and waiting 30 minutes for opening time just to discover that you can’t eat the food. Search for Gino Sorbillo Isola
Nowhere Cafe - We had late afternoon flights and work to do so my friend suggested going Nowhere (I was confused when she said this). We could not find the place for 20 minutes so I was convinced it was a prank. Some broken Italian with a local and switching to Google Maps. We eventually found it in the next street over. Cosy is the word that comes to mind. I ordered a coffee and their gluten free carrot cake. Possibly the best gluten free carrot cake I've tasted ever. Worth the stop if you have time.
Eating Sorbet whenever I saw some - Fancy Sorbet at the Prada Museum, it was the only gluten free item on the menu. Still tasty with the tiny meringues. An open front stall on Lake Como, there were a few we stopped at the first one. Worth it.
Order in
Chihuahua Tacos - Everyone has a food that they wish they could experience the first bite again for the first time. This is mine. I ordered this twice during my stay because it was so good. Flavourful, packed tacos that will knock your socks off on the first bite and make you crave more even after you're full. I ordered this on Deliveroo by filtering gluten free places and I am glad I picked this place. Will definitely visit this place in person when I visit Milan again.
Burger My Heart - will clog your heart with carbs and you'll smile whilst doing so. I suffered a case of eyes bigger than the stomach and ordered chips with my burger. My regret is that I don't have a secondary stomach because those chips were too delicious. I did end up reheating them the next morning for breakfast but they weren't truly the same. I kept it simple with a chicken burger, then slept like a happy and full log. Skip dessert unless you are pulling a Joey from friends and wearing maternity trousers. They do offer gluten free and lactose free ice cream if you are.
Side Bar
Mom cafĂ© - If you want to check out the bar scene in Milan I'd suggest starting here for the experience. It’s a cultural insight like no other. It’s packed with a relaxed vibe. There's people chilling out on the streets with some outdoor seating. We went on Saturday which I think is the best time to go. Do not stray from your usual drinks order though. Drinks are strong so I would not recommend it as a place to experiment and try something new (I found out that I do not like Martinis), unless you have a buddy. Nice place to meet some locals or tourists and get suggestions on where to hit next.
